Dua Lipa's honeymoon has already boosted tourism in Italy The pop star's favorite destinations have become the most popular ones for summer 2026
The dream wedding of Dua Lipa and Callum Turner has been one of the most talked-about events of recent months. From the outfits scrutinized across social media to a guest list of around 300 attendees featuring names such as Donatella Versace, Madonna, Harry Styles, Elton John and Charli xcx, along with an itinerary spanning the Amalfi Coast, Rome, Naples, Basilicata and Sicily, the celebrations quickly became a global media phenomenon. The pop star and the actor had previously tied the knot in a private civil ceremony in London on May 31, attended only by close family members and friends.
From that moment on, however, every stop on their journey through Italy became a social media sensation. Much like previous celebrity weddings, including Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez's wedding in Venice, the couple's trip appears to have influenced travel trends. According to an analysis by SIXT, Google searches related to the couple increased by 1,800% in Italy over the past week, while thousands of users attempted to retrace every stop of their honeymoon, turning it into a modern-day pilgrimage. TikTok and Instagram played a key role in fueling the trend, as photos, videos and sightings helped create a viral map of Italy's most desirable destinations.

Italy's status as the favorite summer destination for celebrities is nothing new. Just look at the rise of the summer in Italy phenomenon, which has cemented the country as the ultimate seasonal destination for influencers and international travelers alike. Within this context, Dua Lipa and Callum Turner's wedding perfectly illustrates how major celebrity events now have a direct impact on travel trends and the collective imagination. Topping the list of the fastest-growing destinations is the Amalfi Coast, which recorded a staggering 3,250% increase in online searches. Images of the couple enjoying Positano and the breathtaking scenery of the Campania coastline quickly spread across the internet, making the area one of the most coveted destinations of the moment. Interest in Villa TreVille Beach Club, where the couple were spotted, also rose significantly.
The Trevi Fountain ranked second, with searches increasing by 2,800%. Photos of the couple in front of Rome's iconic landmark attracted millions of views, while a TikTok video reportedly surpassed 4.3 million views. More broadly, content featuring Dua Lipa in the Italian capital generated tens of millions of interactions. Naples also experienced a remarkable boost, recording a 1,600% increase in searches. Between a stroll through the historic center and dinner at Concettina ai Tre Santi, the couple reignited global fascination with the city.
Palermo is not a theme park
Behind the fairytale narrative, however, controversy was never far away. Once again, the debate over cities being effectively "rented out" for celebrity events resurfaced, as iconic Italian destinations increasingly become exclusive backdrops for high-profile weddings. It is a familiar story, one that previously unfolded during Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez's wedding in Venice, where protests over overtourism and the privatization of public spaces dominated public discussion.
Palermo, where the couple hosted the final celebrations, also experienced several days of disruption. The historic center was placed under tight security from early afternoon to ensure maximum privacy for the newlyweds and their guests, who arrived in tinted-window vans for a private visit to the Gallery of Modern Art. In the following days, the celebrations continued at some of Sicily's most exclusive venues, including Villa Valguarnera in Bagheria and Palazzo Gangi, famously featured in Luchino Visconti's The Leopard.
The event also brought traffic restrictions, temporary road closures and an extensive security operation that frustrated many local residents. Posters criticizing overtourism appeared across the city bearing slogans such as "Palermo is not for rent." «I understand the complaints about the closures, but there was no alternative. The security measures were requested by the police,» Bagheria mayor Filippo Maria Tripoli told the Corriere della Sera.
«Perhaps the average citizen doesn't fully realize the media impact that the wedding of an international pop star like Dua Lipa can have on our region in terms of visibility and economic return. Rather than criticizing this wedding, we should be outraged whenever people fail to respect the rules.» Many Palermo residents and local activists, however, hold a different view, seeing events like this as yet another example of a city increasingly shaped by aspirational tourism. The debate remains unresolved. While celebrities continue to reinforce Italy's status as the world's most desirable summer destination, concerns are growing that the line between promoting a place, turning it into a spectacle and privatizing public space is becoming increasingly blurred, often at the expense of the people who call these places home.
